Friday 5th December Temprature 88f

First of all just to upset everybody I am now on 10 days holiday, that is 2 weekends ( 4 days) and 6 six days this is (again) for the Eid holidays so have been planning a couple of things to do. Now just to put a smile back on your faces we don’t have any time off over the Christmas and New Year holiday season (good job Christmas Day is on our weekend otherwise we would have been working!).

As you know I like to take a walk along the beach but hadn’t been for a few days and people where telling me about the ‘Red Tide’ and how it had affected the beaches so I decided I just had to go and have a look. The pictures show how bad it can be, I thought it was bad when I had took the pictures of the blowfish but this was worse thousands (if not 10’s of thousands) of fish washed up on the beach. Most of the fish where between 6 to 8 inches but now and again, a larger one had been left on the shore. I believe that the ‘Red Tide’ is when an red algae blooms out at sea and starves the sea of oxygen thus killing the fish, I’m sure somebody out there can tell me if I’m right or wrong, I took one picture of what could be some of the algae but of course I could be completely wrong.

If you have been reading this blog (and if not, why not) for some time you will know that me and India joined the Jebel Hash House Harriers. Just to refresh your memories it’s a walking/running club that has a good social life as well. Last Saturday was really good, the walk wasn’t too taxing and we met new people, a couple from Amsterdam who are on holiday and 2 others who are working here as well. Anyway we joined in the fun (by the way you are made to sit on the bath of ice for any misdemeanours or sins that are reported or for anything else that can be made up on the spot!). India volunteered as a ‘Trolly Dolly’ (that is someone who helps with the cleaning of the clubs dinking cups etc). The pictures show some of the new members and other members who have returned or met some special point in their memberships, drinking to a count from the rest of us. Found out that when you get to 10 walks/runs the club chooses a name for you. When you think that some people are called ‘Where the F*** are we’, ‘Friendly with goats’ and other nicknames you can guess I’m dreading what they are going to call me!

Ok so we broke up on Wednesday afternoon, so what have I been doing since then?

Well on Wednesday night it was choir practice and it went well. We have been given quite a schedule for over the Christmas Season, as although the Omani people don’t observe the Christian festival as such they do like to join in with the festival atmosphere and of course there is a very large Christian population here, from all over the world. Most shops have some form of Christmas decorations up and sell everything from Christmas trees to advent calendars; some are even playing Christmas carols/songs as you go around shopping. First booking is for this Saturday at the British School of Muscat for a carol service.
Thursday morning was an early start as we had a full day planned. Brian and Linda’s daughter, Jen, is here for a bit of a holiday and they wanted to show her some of the places that they had been to and had asked myself, Lucy and Donald if we would like to make a party of it….of course we said yes!
So we left about 9.30 on Thursday morning to travel to the ‘Turtle Camp’ near Sur about 300 Kilometres away (just under 190 miles for those of you who are not familiar with the metric system yet) but first Brian was going to lead us to a few places of interest.

First call.

After a very picturesque drive we arrived at Al Mudayrib, this town is surrounded by 7 forts and as you can see from the photographs is not that far from the desert properly as you can see the massive sand dunes on the horizon. We had a look around a couple of the forts which are really just ruins at the moment but this was real ‘off the beaten track tourism’ as nothing has as yet been put in place to entice the tourists to this area, although there is signs that the tourist board have things planned as there is a small museum (closed). Anyway, Donald, Lucy and I climbed up to the fort in the town, near where we parked. 2 Omani lads showed us the way for no other reason than we were visitors (the Omani people can be very friendly and hospitable) when we went to climb up inside the tower they tried to show us the way with lights from their mobile phone but it was really pitch black and quite scary as the steps where of uneven height so you had to be careful (Lucy decided to stay at the bottom as she felt a little claustrophobic). The little bit of terror was worth it though as there was a brilliant view over the town and wadi after which it is named.
After we came down we joined the rest of the gang as we walked up the back alleys towards the tower that is on the highest hill behind the town. And that’s another thing about this country you can feel safe here even when your off the beaten path as you don’t get hassled from the locals, that will greet you or wave but don’t crowd you or make you feel threatened in any way, but woman and girls should have a male with them as it is a male oriented country. We climbed up to the highest tower, which was quite a climb as there is no prepared path or steps so it is pure rough and ready ground. Again as you can see from the pictures, fantastic scenery and views over the town.

Wadi Bani Khalid
Our next stop was quite spectacular; a fresh water desert oasis surrounded by palm trees and of course, mountains. I had forgotten to pack my bathers otherwise I would have been diving in, the water looked that inviting. The water was crystal clear with loads of fish swimming around (how they got there don’t ask me!), in the picture where I am sitting down the water is a dark blue it is that deep, the locals where calling us to come in and where showing off by jumping from the cliffs into these deep pools.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/WadiBaniKhalid#

And then on to the Ras Al Jinz ‘Turtle Camp’. After a little adventure (a couple of wrong turns, again a big thanks to local Omanis who showed us the way by driving in front of us to show us the direction), we arrived just in time for dinner and just in time to miss a bit of a down pour which had left the ground very wet! Not seen any real rain since I got here! Accommodation is basic with the sleeping huts being just like wooden tents, which have rushes attached to them to soften their outline. Our huts had 3 single beds in them with mattresses, pillows and blankets all supplied. There was several shower/toilet blocks but again very basic.

Dinner was served in an open sided reed roofed thatched area, which had not escaped the rain, but the chairs and table we were to sit at had been dried and cleaned for us. There was only another 2 parties at the camp at the same time so it was a bit intimate. The meal was Roast Lamb, Grilled Chicken, salads, rice, humus, lentils, roast potatoes, Arab bread and fruit, coffee, tea or soft drinks. You could have as much as you liked so Donald stoked up a few times! We also had some beer with us so had a can and Donald had brought some Tequila so I had to have one, didn’t I!? Linda had brought some red wine, so I had to have some of that as well! After dinner we sat and talked for a while then got ready to go to the Turtle Beach Research Centre.

Ras Al Hadd Turtle Beach.
The research centre is government run and a tour costs 4 Rials but can be very rewarding. You are taken by a guide to the beach, which is a good 15 20 minute walk. On approaching the beach our guide stopped us and explained what the research institute was doing which is basically protecting the turtles hatching ground. He gave us some information on breeding habits and lifespan of the ‘Green’ turtle. We were also told that no flash photography (or even torches) was allowed on the beach, that we needed to be quiet in order not to alarm the females who had come ashore to lay their eggs.
He then took us to see a female who seemed to be digging a hole ready for laying her eggs. The turtle was big, I mean BIG. The shell was close to 3 foot long from behind her head to her tail and she was sweeping sand almost 8 to 10 feet behind her. After about 15 minutes the guide told us that in fact she had already laid her eggs about 3 feet behind the hole that she was digging and the hole was in fact a decoy to put predators off the mark of where her eggs actually where. The hole by this time was 2 to 3 foot deep and the turtle started the crawl out of it, heading for the sea. We watched her make her way in to the surf, she seemed to be very slow, as if she was extremely tired, or perhaps that was how I felt she would be feeling. We where then taken to see a female who had just come up the beach to lay her eggs but on the way the guide spotted a hatchling breaking the surface of the sand and too us to show the new born turtle to us. We then carried on to where the female was preparing her hatching hole, the guide took us away before the actual laying, which I felt was right, to give the turtle a little privacy. Although we only saw 2 turtles on the night we were told that on some nights you could see many turtles making their way up the beach to lay their eggs or making their ponderous way back to the sea after a job well done.
We then returned to the camp (around 11ish) for as much sleep as we could get as we were to return first thing in the morning (between 5 and 6).

Needless to say I overslept, but we still got to the centre by about 6 am. We then walked down to the beach. As we approached the beach we could see a group of people gathered together and went see what it was they where watching. Then we saw them, baby turtles making a brave dash for the ocean! It was a great thing to see, and the children who where with their parents where in their element (even ‘helping’ the baby turtles to the sea, whether this was allowed the guide didn’t say!). As the sun rose we could clearly see the seagulls waiting to snatch the unlucky or unwary turtle as they started their long swim of 3 miles to deep water where they would be safe. As the sun came up I was looking around and saw a disturbance in the sand not far from me, and then they came, baby turtle after baby turtle, all about the same size but some darker or with different patterns on their shells. This in itself, made the trip worthwhile!
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/RasAlHaddTurtleBeach#

When we returned to the camp we had breakfast and made ready to leave. The camp accommodation, plus all meals had only cost 18 Rials, which, all in all, I thought was a great deal for us! Would recommend the experience to anyone who is coming out here, either to work or on a holiday!
On the way back we called at Sur, just to have a quick look and take a few pictures. A very picturesque place and the only place I’ve seen, up till now, where there are actual working dhows.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/Sur#

Well that completes my first adventure of this Eid. Tomorrow I am singing with the choir as I have already said and then off on another adventure to Salalah. Salalah is about 1000 km down south, me and Donald are going by bus! Hope to update, with the full story by Wednesday, so don’t forget to come back!

Friday 28/11/2008 Temprature 32c

Well a couple of weeks have gone past very quickly yet again. Have been pretty busy at school and also in my social life. Have now been on 2 more walks with the Jebreel Hash Harriers and think its doing me some good! The last walk was a killer as the first half of the walk was mainly up hill, or more precisely small mountains! The view when I got to the top though was spectacular (wish I’d remembered to take my camera!) with the plain of Muscat spread in a panoramic view from right past the airport round to Mutrah and Muscat Old Town. On that note I am really glad I got a 4 wheel drive car as I really needed it to get to the places where the walks start from (usually off road, in a dry wadi).

About a week ago me and India joined some people from the Hash for a camping night on As Safah Beach. Was a great night (got slightly worse for wear) with an almost full moon shinning on our bar b que. Didn’t need a tent, just rolled into my sleeping bag and slept under the stars.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/CampingAtAsSefahBeach#

The choir is coming along well and we had our first performance at the British School (where we practice) which went well. I was supposed to be singing with them 2 days ago, got dressed up, drove to the area in great spirits, couldn’t find the church!

On the way back decided to call into the Muscat Rugby Football Club social club which has just opened up round the corner from where I live. Not a bad little place and I am seriously thinking of joining (although it is a bit pricey at OMR 60, about 100 quid).

Last week we had National Day celebrations at school and lots of the students dressed in their National Costumes. The girls looked really spectacular in bright colours and jewellery. I was told that the gold headdresses some of them wore are all made from 24 carat gold! It was a smashing celebration with the students putting on dancing, poetry readings and a fashion show.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/NationalDay#

Again I was told that the colours and the way the girls wore their costumes where related to where in Oman her family came from.

Just to finish off, I have mentioned previously about the roads here, and the way they seem to change over night. Well the main road not far from my apartment is now open, which when you consider that it was just being built when I arrived here is fantastic work. I’ve took more photos of the roads and also some views of Muscat from up behnd my apartment. The pictures also show the brand new highway that’s being built….don’t know where it’s going to yet!
http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/ViewsFromAroundMyApartment#

I have also added the next links to some pictures taken by Brian and Linda on their travels to the mountains and wadi’s of Oman and of the National day celebrations.
The pictures of the interior are really spectacular and I hope to get out there soon to take my own pictures and have my own adventure!

Still not recieving any comments or feedback off people.....please feel free to ask if you want to know about anything thats going on out here, if you want to know a bit more about lifestyle, the locals, the hotels and bars, the work, the cost of petrol (filled my car up the other day 66ltr cost 8 Rials, about 12 quid!). So come would love to here from you people!
Monday 10/11/08 temp about 30c

Yes I know…before anybody tells me I have been lazy about updating this blog, but I’m back now and got a load to tell you so lets get on with it.

Here’s a bit I wrote but didn’t publish:

Wednesday 8th October
Just did some shopping in the afternoon but went to Ruwi Souk that night (a large shopping area) and had a lovely Indian meal and bought some DVD’s. The dvd’s are collections of films like 5 of Bruce Lee movies, Indiana Jones (4 movies) and a Animation collection (which includes Shrek 1&2 and Madagascar) each costing 1 Rial (About ₤1.50) for the collection.
Well got a full day planned for tomorrow, going to the beach in the morning and also checking out a couple of cars, going for a sightseeing cruise up the coast in the afternoon and going out with friends for dinner. Will report back later and of course have some more photos.

http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/DhowCruise#

Well went to Marjan Beach, and as Ramadan is over was able to take something to eat and drink. Went snorkelling as usual and spotted my first turtle! It wasn’t very big about 18inches/2 foot but it was great seeing it close too. Managed to swim with it for a couple of minutes and enjoyed the time! Loads of brightly coloured fish of course, will have to see about getting an underwater camera to take some pictures. Checked out a couple of cars on the way back, got a couple of possibilities, will let you know how I get on.

In the afternoon went with friends to a local marina to board a (motorised) dhow for a 2 hour cruise off the coast, very relaxing but I thought it was a bit over priced at 15 Rials. Took lots of pictures again.

That night we just went to a local restaurant for a bite to eat, then home, was a tiring day but well worth the effort!

I don’t know if you may have noticed but as we move into the ‘Autumn’ season here the air is getting a lot clearer, a lot less heat haze.

Back to here and now:
So when we had our weeks holiday we could really chill out….got some great work done on building my tan and got around the town quite a bit. Also took a trip through to Nizwas ( about a 100 Km), with Jonathan and Jessica (kids stayed at home to play on their Playstation) which used to be the capital of Oman. Had a good look round the fort and the souk, but think I missed a lot of the sights. Never mind got all year to go back and see them. The drive took us around the base of the mountains and there was some spectacular sights, which photographs don’t do justice to.

http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/NizwasAndBaha02#

We also went to Baha were they are rebuilding the fort as another tourist attraction. Tried to find the ‘Flying Mosque’ which legend has it flew through the air one night and landed above 2 other mosques! Missed the turn off!
Talking of which most of Oman is still virgin territory for the tourist as Oman only has a fledgling tourist board, and because of that the local people are still very friendly and helpful (as most speak English as well).

Not long after this trip Jonathan and Jessica (and the kids) packed up and moved back to the Uk. Hope everything goes well for them!

Time to say something about the roads and driving in Oman.
If you are a pedestrian in Oman, you often take your life in your hands trying to get across a road, as this is basically a car oriented place but saying that away from the main roads drivers will often slow down or stop in order to let you cross. But if you are walking don’t be alarmed at hearing cars sound their horns, they are usually taxi’s wanting to know if you want to hire them.

The most times you will hear car horns is when you are driving! I’m afraid to say that the locals are not very patient! Take the worst driver you know, the one who never uses his indicators, who continually tail gates cars, who will cut you up without a thought, who will try to squeeze through gaps that a push bike couldn’t get through, that speeds up to roundabouts and breaks (with a squeal of breaks) at the last second, who basically thinks he is the most important person on the road, multiply him by ten and you still don’t come close to how they drive here! So needless to say you have to be a little brave to drive here. Saying all that, they are building a great road system (but contra flows can change in a matter of hours, signage and diversions are few and far between and often don’t make sense anyway!) and it should be finished some time this century!.

By the way I have got myself a car now. It’s a Jeep Cherokee 4 wheel drive, which I will use for visits into the desert at some future date although it has come in useful already.

Went for a walk a few weeks ago as it has started to cool down a little and took some pictures of the bank with the golden doors. And they are GOLD (well 24 carat gold plated anyway), check out the pictures.

http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/BankAndNewCar#

Have also joined (at last) the Hash House Harriers. This is a walking/running club that gets together every weekend and after the exercise we have a bit of a social gathering. The first meeting I managed to tread on a nail and ended up with an infected TOE! Last weekend was really good though. Needed the 4 Wheel drive though as the meeting place was well off road. Our walk took us past 3 or 4 ruins of forts and through a lush wadi of palm trees. The after walk social was excellent and I am looking forward to more meetings.

Don’t know If I mentioned but I have also joined a local community choir (at the ‘British School’) and we gave a short performance (along with the school choir) for a students recital evening. There is lots more in store, we are even booked to sing at the re-opening of the Al Bustan Palace Hotel (another 5* + hotel) as well as a local church and of course getting ready for Christmes.

Still trying to get my martial arts club going but things have started to move and I hope to have some positive news in the very near future.

I mentioned that it is getting cooler here as we move into winter, although the temperature has dropped quite a bit it is still in the high 70’s F during the night and can still get up to 100F during the day.
Been back to the British Embassy for another quiz night (for Halloween) and again we didn’t disgrace ourselves and won another spot prize (this time a mix of sweeties!). In fact I’m off there tonight for a reception. I’m sort of representing the school at an ICT Education Technology show. So free nibbles and pass the Ferrero Roche!

Friday 3rd October Temp 36c

Been a bit lax about updating my blog but here goes.

Well what with work and the fact that my arthritis had been killing me I never got to go to karate and just spent a lot of time just resting my ankles, even when the weekend came round I just spent the first day in the apartment (got a fair bit of work done for school though) but on Friday I went to the Oman Dive centre with Linda, Brian and Donald. It cost 3 Rials to get in but was worth every biases. It is quite a complex, with a restaurant, Bar tent (closed for Ramadan), private beach apartments fresh water swimming pool and of course a fantastic beach! Seen about doing a refresher diving course, so hope to be able to bring you some pictures of the sea life soon.

Even the drive to the ODC (both coming and going) was great with some fantastic views from the mountains, you get to see some really weird and wonderful things like the model of an Incense Burner in the middle of a roundabout, in fact there is quite a lot of sights like this through out Muscat, will have to try and make time to go around and get some pictures of them

By the way Donald took quite a few of these photos (and posed in some as well) so thanks Donald!

Saturday, Sunday and Monday where just normal working days, although I hadn’t forgot that the Ju-Jitsu gradings where on and phoned Sensei Paul Dawson to wish him and the club all the best. Also on Sunday night me and India took a walk to a local café for a shwarma and fruit drink (a shwarma is like a small chicken kebab with coleslaw) and yes that me drinking a coconut drink direct out of the coconut!

Monday was a bit of a strange day as we were breaking up for a weeks holiday. This is the Eid Festival which marks the end of Ramadan , the Tuesday is like Christmas Eve and the actual day Ramadan ends (Wednesday) is like a Christmas day and a time for family, friends and celebration. Monday night we had been invited to the British Embassy for a quiz night (sorry no pictures allowed), was a bit of a laugh and we didn’t disgrace ourselves. (looks like its going to be a monthly thing and the beer is cheap, I’m not driving next time!).

Tuesday was a bit of a stay at home day, got some assessments for school done and just generally chilled out. Did a bit shopping and chatted to a couple of friends on MSN. Don’t forget you can always send me an email from this blog or just leave a comment (but be nice please).

Monday 22nd September Daytime Temp 38c

Well thought I’d better update the blog. Went to karate a week gone yesterday and really enjoyed it. The warm up is the best I have done for a long while and I felt really good afterwards (but I must admit a little tired as well). Was ok the next morning and got on with the job of teaching but come home time both my ankles had started to ache. On Tuesday I was feeling all the exercises and my arthritis in both my ankles was pretty bad (this has gone on all week now so missed Karate on Wednesday an last night).

News on opening a Ju-Jitsu club. I have been asked to trial a club at school as part of the extra curricular activities (which every teacher has to do 1 hour per week), been down to the gym and checked out the mats which are ok for now. Mr Iyad (He’s like a vice principal) has asked if he can join in as he has wanted to do Ju-Jitsu for a while (must keep him on my side!). So will be starting soon and see how it goes…..Paul get your Gi ready!

Started looking for a car as the girls have decided to buy their own, so keeping a look out for any good deals . Will let you know how I get on over the next few weeks. Still keeping the hire car on for now as you really need transport here.

Went to a bar b q on Wednesday. Was a good night but very humid, must have sweated buckets. Thursday morning went off to Marjan Beach again to do a bit more snorkelling. Donald and Rene (teacher from Port Elizabeth, South Africa) came along as well. Rene got talking to a couple of guys on the beach, turns out one was a teacher (Ernie) from South Africa and his friend was from Egypt (Fiasal) and runs a gym. When you look at the pictures I’ll let you decide who is who!

After that apart from shopping and resting my ankles, it’s been a pretty standard week, a bit like being at home but without the cold and rain and of course no pubs to go to at the minute. (Ramadan finishes a week come Wednesday).

Don’t forget to leave any comments for me or be brave and send me an email, love to hear from my friends and acquaintances.

Sunday 14th September Temp 34c

Another weekend over, thought I was going to have more to put on my blog but it wasn’t to be, just stayed in last night and chilled.

Anyway another week has gone by and everything is coming together, classes have been sorted out, syllabus checked and teaching has started in earnest.
Wednesday night we went to Mutrah Souk again (met Jonathan, Jessica and kids and took them along) and ended up in the port side café where we went before, again very cheap!

Had quite a busy time on Thursday, as around teatime went for a walk along the beach. Tide was on its way out and nearly every 30 yards or so had left a ‘blow’ fish on the beach. In fact the beach seemed to be littered with sea life. I’m sure some of you budding oceanographers and scuba divers can help me identify them, I’ve took a guess but I know you will put me right! Click on this link to see photographs.

http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/OnTheSeaShore#

Well on the way back from the beach we decided to stop off at Cirt’s for a fruit juice and that’s when I got roped into playing cricket for the school! I mean ME playing cricket! I don’t know which way to hold the racket never mind the rules! Turned out to be a good night even though we got beat! So as you can see I am keeping up my exercise. Even signed up to play in a friendly tennis tournament!

Anyway Friday was chill out day and tidy up day, so nothing much to report.

Tonight I am going to join Karate, just for something to do! Still looking to open my own club here but waiting for the principle to get back to me on insurances etc.
Will let you know how I get on. Catch you all later!

Saturday September 6th Temp 38c

Well the weekend is over and its back to school. This isn’t bad as we are on reduced teaching hours because of Ramadan. We now start teaching at 8.50 and finish at 1.30 AND have 2 x 20 breaks! Heaven!

Well last Wednesday we went out to the Qurm shopping centre for a look around and of course to try out another restaurant. This time there was me and India, Cirst, Brian and Linda. Ended up in a restaurant called Automatic. Again a very nice meal and again very reasonable (about OMR 4).

Thursday the girls were going holiday shopping so I packed my snorkelling gear for a day out with Brian, Linda and Donald. Took them to Marjan Beach (Brian was driving) and we all had a good swim and general chill out. Was really hot, with clear skies and it was the first time I felt I needed the sun block! Used factor 50 and still got a little burnt on the face!. Weren’t out too long as we couldn’t really drink anything (or eat) due to Ramadan (it’s very bad manners to eat or drink in view of Muslims who are fasting between sunrise and sunset.)

That same night though we were booked at the Shangri La Restaurant. This is right on the outskirts of Muscat (Along the Bustan Road, near Jissah). This was a special buffet type meal for celebrating Ramadan, and as we are residents we were also able to claim a discount on the bill.

Friday I’m afraid was cleaning and washing day! The main cleaning chore is to get rid of all the sandy like dust that gets into the apartments. After that I just basically chilled out although I did a little studying (Thanks for the stuff Gill! Got any more?)

Oh by the way for anybody who may be thinking of coming out here to work, try and get an HSBC international account as there are branches here and you get one free transfer per month.

I think I mentioned that Oman seems to be one big building site, but it amazing how quickly things get finished. The major road link that they are building near my apartment is nearing completion and it looked a mess 3 weeks ago!

Friday 29th August Temp 32c

A busy weekend is nearly over and its been a mix of party, chill, and sunshine.

Thursday night met at Brian and Linda’s (from Middlesbrough, Maths and English respectively) place for a few beers before we went off to he Royal Plaza Hotel to check out the bar there. Wasn’t a bad night, beer was more expensive than the Intercontinental but it was a nice place.
Thursday was chill out and shopping day. Went to the Lu Lu Hypermarket. They have just about everything you could want on 2 floors, with the top floor selling all the clothes, electrical items, kitchen/bedroom stuff etc and the ground floor the foodstuff. You can get a full pineapple freshly cut into rounds for about 800 biases (about £1) and it tastes absolutely gorgeous. Had to get myself some isotonic drink mix as you really sweat buckets here and I needed to replace my salts. In fact all the fruit (and there is everything you can think of) is cheap and so is the vegetables. Meat is reasonable although I haven’t bought any pork (which is very expensive due to a tax on it) and you are able to everything your used to and even camel!

Today, India wanted to stay in and chill and Cirst was out with friends so I had the car to myself. Phoned up Donald (Philippine, Geography teacher) as he had been talking about going to the beach at Ras Al Hamra. I picked him up and off we went. Didn’t get lost this time as I had a good idea where we where going but just before we got to the place we came across a lovely little beach (Marjan Beach), which the guide book said was a great place to snorkel, so we decided to give it a go. It was brilliant! You only had to go out about 10 feet and there was loads of brightly coloured fish, I must have seen at least 10 different species and even one fish that must have been about 2 foot long! Took some pictures of course, click the link to see them (not for the faint hearted cos I’m in them!)

Ras Al Hamra was a washout, you have to be a member of the club to use the beach etc, so it was a good job we had found Marjan Beach.

Wednesday 27th August Temp 31c

The weekend starts here!

Well it’s all been happening over the last few days, got all my paperwork sorted out now. Got my driving license, my bank account and most important of all got my liquor license! Went to the liquor supermarket as soon as I got my license to stock up as it will soon be Ramadan, which means no alcohol is served. Prices aren’t bad about the same as England and they do have a good range of products (couldn’t find any Brown Ale though).
Been teaching since Monday but only to a few classes as the AS and A2 students don’t come back till this Saturday (don’t forget our weekend is Thursday and Friday) so will have a pretty full timetable from then on. Been given a new course to teach which has a programming module (going to use VB6) so if anybody has any resources that may come in handy please email them to me.
Weather is already starting to cool down a bit as we move into autumn, even turned my AC off at about 8pm last night as it wasn’t needed, the temperature in the apartment was just right for lazing around in shorts (and nothing else).
The internet connection here isn’t as reliable as back home, so for those of you who are on my messenger list, I am not ignoring you, its just that sometimes it can be a day or two before I can connect.
This is going to be the first weekend when we are going to go out with a lot more people from school; plans for tonight include a nice meal then to the Crown Plaza Hotel to check out the Aussy/Kiwi pub there. Will give you an update tomorrow.

A quick note to Jessica who’s coming out to join us soon. Most things are available here and the prices aren’t too dissimilar from the UK. Books seem to be about the only luxury, although having transport is a MUST. I’m lucky to be sharing the cost of a rental car but there is cars to be bought for reasonable prices (you can get a good second hand 4x4 for around OMR 4000).

For those of you who may be interested I have added a few more pictures at :

Friday 22nd August Temp 32c

Don't forget to scroll down and find the links to my photo albums!

A really quiet and restful day. Just cleaned my apartment and cleaned up some terrace furniture whilst getting a bit of a tan. Can’t really stay out in the sun too long as it starts to feel like your melting!. So tend to stay out between 15 and 20 mins before coming back into the air conditioning! Had to go back to the opticians this afternoon to see about my glasses, going to cost me OR 30 for a new frame and to fit my old lenses which isn’t bad I suppose, about the same as England but I will be able to puck them up on Sunday (don’t forget the weekend here is Thursday and Friday). Then just did a little shopping and met another teacher from The American,British Academy for a coffee. Had a bit of a chat and fixed her laptop as well! After that just came back to the apartment to make myself some late tea and just generally play about on my laptop. Don’t seem to see many people on MSN, remember at the moment I’m 3 hours ahead of you. Send me an email or leave a comment on this blog, give me some feedback on my little diary so far. Catch you soon.

Thursday 21st August Temp 36c

Left to Right:
India (Australia), Susan (Canada), Cirst (Scotland) at the Bar-B-Q

Been quite busy the last few days getting paper work sorted out etc and starting induction at the school. Tuesday was mainly spent getting lost driving around, the roads here are a bit of a challenge as a lot of building work is going on and the contra flows, lane changes and turns seem to change daily. Tailgating seems to be a popular sport here as well as overtaking on either side and cutting other drivers up, not a day goes by without seeing a crash of some sort, especially on the main freeway. On Tuesday we visited the Grand Hyatt Hotel (as the girls wanted to check out the Gym and sports facilities. They got a good deal for use of all amenities and even discount off beverages etc). I checked out the martial arts suit and went to see the instructor after school on Wednesday. We also met a few friends there and had a bit of a natter and a cool drink (dead expensive…Iced Tea OR3 200 Baisa..about £4.50!). That evening we took Donald (Philippines) over to Ruwi to the Arab restaurant as me and the girls had enjoyed it last time. Again it was great.
On Wednesday morning we started our induction at the school and there were very few surprises. My time table is all ICT courses but also teaching year 9 and 10 Computer studies (which I am waiting to find out means exactly what?). After school we got ready to go to the Grand Hyatt again so the girls could start using their gym memberships and I could see about the martial art class. Again we got lost, the roads can be very confusing especially as very few of them actually have names! Anyway we arrived too late for the martial arts class so I just watched and then had a quick talk with the instructor. He has told me there is a Ju-Jitsu club in Ruwi and I am going to check it out.
Just played around on the computer that night and was in bed by 10.15, felt really tired! Got the MSN web camera link going though and had a good chat with Andi in Cramlington.
Thursday it was more of the same, induction at school then a little shopping (my glasses broke so trying to get new frames), we took a wrong turning this time and spent 20 minutes trying to get back on the freeway!.
Tonight some of our fellow teachers had a bar-B-Q and invited us over, it was good meeting them and getting to know them a little better (think I have volunteered to play on a cricket team…..help! which way up do you hold the racket!).
And so to the end of the day, by rights we shouldn’t have been in work today as Thursday is now our new Saturday, but we have had a mini holiday since we got here so I can’t complain!

Monday 18th August Temp 36c

Well today was another early start, although I could have done with a lie in after watching the match! A pint of Fosters is about £2.80 so not too bad. Good result for us!
Anyway today we had to go to get our resident permit, which meant we had to be finger printed, and then we had to go to another place to have our photos taken our fingerprints checked and signature specimen taken. I had to be different…..seemingly my finger prints on my thumbs are practically none existent! Anyway still got my resident card so me and the girls went off to hire a car for a couple of weeks. We ended up getting a cheap Nissan Sunny (OR 160 about £210) for a month! Going to see about opening a bank account soon and also about getting a liquor licence.
The car is an automatic which is ok for India but me and Cirst have to really concentrate…………I’ve had a couple of near things trying to change gears when I haven’t got a clutch! But I’m getting used to it (although I think I’ve taken a few years off India!).Just used the car to go shopping and to get our internet sorted out, that how I’m online from now on, so I hope to hear from you all soon

Sunday 18th Temp 34c

Cirst and India India showing how women need to be dressed
This morning India, Cirst and I went to the Grand mosque. The mosque is open from 8 till 11 so we had an early start (about 9: 30), again the taxi ride cost only 2 Rials and it was still 3 or 4 miles (looking forward to getting my own transport though). If you are going to visit the mosque Dress very conservatively: Men, trousers and long sleeved shirt, women: trousers, long sleeved blouse and something to cover their head (pashminas are cheap to buy here). Read the signs so that you don’t offend any of the locals. It is free to wander round the mosque and the workmanship is fantastic. It is a massive place (see photographs) and you need to take your time as only the main temple is air conditioned. Although I took a lot of photos I am looking forward to going back for another visit.
Just chilled out this afternoon, going to watch the match at the Intercontinental Hotel tonight so will continue tomorrow.

Saturday 17th Temp 36c

Had a message last night to say we were going for our blood tests this morning, had to be ready for 7:15am, everything starts early here to avoid the main heat of the day. The school bus picked us up and so we got to meet a few more people. Still no schedule for an induction or for any of the immigration things we need to do, can’t really do much until we have our residency card.
After talking to Lucy and India we are going to hire a car for the first few weeks between us, this is just until we get settled and all the paper work done then we may look to buy a car.
Again we went shopping to the hypermarket mainly to show Cirst where it is but still needed one or two things myself. We made arrangement for us all (myself India, Lucy and Cirst) to go out to Ruwi tonight. Ruwi is a district in Muscat where there is a souk (traditional market area) and lots of restaurants of different nationalities. Lucy didn’t make it again as she is still tired, but Cirst , India and myself had a good look round and went for a meal in an Arabic restaurant.
Very interesting cuisine! India ordered the Kebab, Cirst the Bar B Que and I ordered the ‘Aries’ (Aries=Ram? = Goats meat?) from the dinner menu. We were given a soup to start with, a bit like a chicken soup with a little pasta in it and a lump of unidentifiable bony meat, which tasted quite nice, a side salad (carrots, tomatoes, shredded cabbage and limes) and then our main course. India’s was like the Shami Kebabs you get at an Indian restaurant, The bar b que was just beef (flame grilled) and mine was like very thin pitta breads stuffed with a thin layer of minced and spiced lamb. We were each given a side dish of homous and the girls plain pitta breads so they could make there own kebabs. We only had water to drink as that’s all other people were drinking and to be truthful that’s all I really wanted at the time. And the bill for this gastronomic feast? 4 Rials 700 Baisa, less than £7!.
From Ruwi we decided to go to Mutrah Souk (where Lucy, India and I went on Thursday night) just for another look around and also to get another of them beautiful fruit drinks!
From there we decided to go back to the Intercontinental Hotel for a drink before calling it a night. This is where it all went wrong! I had been wearing shorts all day, they were down to my knees but I was not allowed into any of the bars as were not long enough! So beware if your buying shorts for when you come out here make sure they go past you knees or as I am going to do in future wear trousers or jeans if your going to the pubs/hotels etc.

Friday 16th Temp 34c

This is the Holy Day here so no building work was going on and it was quite quiet when I woke up. Spent most of the morning loading software on to my laptop and just generally chilling out. Still not had any word from school about induction or getting the Omani paper work done so time has been all our own. India came up for awhile and we made plans to do a bit more shopping but not till the afternoon. Although India is from Perth (Australia) she still doesn’t like being out in the sun too much and especially in the very hot hours between 9am and 2 pm, so we made arrangements to go out about 2ish. We are also trying to meet up with others (like Cirst and Michael who are in separate apartments some distance away) just to swap any info or have a chat.
Getting good a bargaining for a taxi! Got one for 2½ Rials (about £3.20) which is very good when you consider it’s about 5 miles to the main shopping centre from our accommodation! Got some more stuff in, it’s amazing the stuff that you feel you need.
India and I are going to meet Cirst tonight (as Lucy stills feels tired and wants to rest) at the Intercontinental Hotel which is near the sea front. Just to have a chat and compare notes on how we are settling in.
Met Cirst at the hotel but went next door to ‘Trader Vic’s’ (a Polynesian type restaurant and bar) for a drink and natter. We each had a cocktail (not cheap at nearly £5 but very nice) and talked about our first impressions of Oman. We then decided to go back to the hotel as there is an English type bar inside. Prices are reasonable there and they have a good range of beers AND I found out they have the premiership matches live so going to watch the Newcastle match on Sunday.

Day 2 (Thursday 14th August) Temp 32c

Seem to over my jet lag already! Woke up at 6am to visit the bathroom and then just dosed till 8am. Again just lazed around the apartment till India came up, we compared shopping lists (its amazing the amount of stuff you miss if its not there, like a tin opener that works!) Come 12, me, India and Lucy decided to go shopping!
First of all though we had to walk about 10 mins to get to an area where we could get a taxi. Needless to say it was boiling hot, you know what they say about mad dogs and Englishmen! The first taxi that stopped wanted to charge us 10 Rials (about £13) which didn’t seem bad to me but Lucy said ‘no’ too expensive and walked away. She then stopped a taxi/bus and asked how much to the main hypermarket and that was 500 Baisa (about 65p) each…….guess which one we got! Anyway we got to the Carrefore Hypermarket and started our shopping, with the amount of stuff we all got we would have needed a taxi/bus just for the stuff! But we got 2 taxis for 8 Rials, so if any of you are coming out remember to barter and never pay more than 5 Rials (and that includes the tip!) By the way 5 Rials is about £6.50p)
After getting back to the apartment we spent some time chilling out again, well mainly I was playing with my new laptop (prices aren’t bad a little cheaper than the UK). Then we decided to got to Mutrah Souk (this is like a market) and this is where Lucy really came into her own! Boy can that woman haggle……even the shop keepers ended up laughing! But she did save India a fair bit of cash! After the Souk we decided to have something to eat and chose a small café on the seafront. Nothing special you understand and I had a local kebab and absolutely gorgeous mango fruit drink all for ………………wait for it………………….about £1.70p ! The local are very friendly and are not out to ‘get what they can’ (unless your in their shop!) but will chat to you and even help you learn some Arabic sayings, the girls had a great time and had lots of people laughing at their attempts at saying things! Even the taxi drivers are very friendly and you don’t feel crowded by them (but don’t forget to fix your price first, then after that if you give them a tip they feel it’s for a job well done!). Again the girls felt tired so we came back to the apartment block and me and India had a quick nightcap on the terrace just chatting and looking out over the city.

First Day Wednesday 13th Temp 32c

Link to Photo album of apartment : http://picasaweb.google.com/Lezmcg54/ApartmentInOman

Today was just a lazy day! We were advised to rest and take our time unpacking, but being me I had done that as soon as I had arrived but I did have a lazy morning just reading and dozing on my couch. Come lunch time I was getting bored so decided to go for a walk to see what was around the accommodation. Well its turns out there isn‘t anything much and after only 5 mins in the sun I was dripping wet with perspiration, so I came back and had myself a lovely cold drink. Soon after I returned I got a phone call from the principle telling me that 2 other teachers had arrived at my apartment block after me. I asked him to tell them to come up if they felt like it and 10 minutes later I met India. India (27) is from Australia and a very outgoing and lively young lady, we got on like a house on fire and where soon chatting and making plans for going out shopping etc. Lucy (50) (South African by way of New Zealand) I didn’t meet till the evening.

That evening Nigel (the principal) picked us all up and took all the staff who had arrived for a meal in the city (excellent Italian) but people were still tired (although I felt quite good) so after we just came back to our apartments for a nightcap.

My journey out to Oman

I had a nice send off from the airport with both my son’s my daughter in law and my grandson (Leon) being there to make sure I got on the plane (my sisters had tried to meet me at the Metro station but just missed me).

Although I wandered around the departure lounge I couldn’t see anyone who I thought might be flying out to Oman with me, so I just read my book until boarding started. I no sooner got to the departure lounge than they started loading the passengers and I was one of the first to be called. The aircraft was an Emirates Airline plane and was very comfortable and I had a window seat in a row of 2 seats
(we were even given a pillow, blanket and free earphones for the in flight entertainment).

There was a few good movies to choose from, Narnia, Monsters Inc and Iron Man to name a few…..I settled for Iron Man!. The in flight service and food where excellent with free drinks as well (I only had 2 small bottles of wine! Wasn’t I good!)

I didn’t ignore my fellow passenger who turned out to be a doctor on her way back to Thailand. The flight was very smooth with very little turbulence and in fact we made excellent time arriving in Dubai over 40 minutes early! Dubai looked exciting and vibrant from the air but although I had almost 3 hours to wait for my flight the most I would see of it would be the terminal buildings! I had a good tour round the shops read a bit, got bored and went for a pint. WARNING for all of you who are coming out to see me it cost ₤5 a pint!. Anyway I thought what the hell. Had a look around the departure gate for anybody who looked like they could be going on to Oman but again, couldn’t spot anyone. Again we were quickly boarded and ready for take off. 30 minutes later we were still waiting! Seemingly it was rush hour and some planes had not met their slots so we had to wait for them! Anyway again it was a nice flight and quite cool when we touched down at 4.30am, ……only 35° (about 100f)

On arrival at Muscat Airport I had to go to collect my Visa and that’s where I met 2 other people who had travelled from Newcastle as well! There was no trouble getting through immigration or customs and we were met by the school principal who had everything arranged and even gave us a sim card for our phones so that he could contact us about any other arrangements. We then travelled to our accommodation but it turned out I was not in the same place as the 2 fellow teachers I had met at the airport! My accommodation was quite a bit further away (but nearer the school) and I have a penthouse apartment with my own terrace (pictures on the way soon) a large (Queen size) bedroom and living accommodation.

Click Online

You may not be aware but the BBC has a great program called ClickOnline (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/default.stm) and this week they have been talking about FREE software. I am glad to say that they have recommened the same programs that I have suggested on this blog and also one or two others that may be of interest to you. You can watch the program online if, like me, you have missed it on the telly. Just click on the link where it say's watch now.

I am going to test out a few of the other recommendations and will let you know what I think about them at a later date.

Just to let you all know, that after the end of these courses I will no longer be teaching at either Cramlington or Hexham but I wish you all the best of luck in your learning for the future.

Free stuff

There is tons of free stuff available on the web so here are a few links that may help you find something you can use.
http://www.download.com/ is an excellent site for looking for software and I use it as my first port of call when I am looking for free software.

The PC Advisor magazine has loads of downloads (but make sure they are free and full programs not just shareware) their address is http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/downloads/

Some programs I recommend you have installed on your computer are AVG a virus checking program which has just been updated to version 8. Zonealarm a firewall (from Zonelabs.com) both these programs can be downloaded directly from download.com.

One last program that is well worth having is Open Office. This program is a FREE full office suite which is compatible with Microsoft Office . Go to http://www.openoffice.org/ for more information and to download it.

Software: A brief description .

There are 4 different types of software : OEM (original equipment manufacture) which you will pay full price for, Shareware (which is often time limited) this can be used for a period of time and then you are asked to pay for it. Freeware which is still owned by the company or individual who made the software but is free for your own use. Public Domain software is free to use and to change if you want.
